Dear Settlement Family,
We are deeply saddened to share with you that our former Executive Director, Robert Capanna, passed away on January 26, 2018 after a long illness. Our hearts go out to his wife Cathryn and children Stephen, Mariel, and Cecelia, and to all the many relatives and friends whom Bob gathered over his extraordinary life.
Bob came to Settlement in 1976 as the Director of our Kardon-Northeast Branch. In 1982 he was named Executive Director after a nationwide search, and he remained in that position until his retirement in 2009. Under Bob's leadership, the School grew from three branches to six; the nationally acclaimed arts integrated preschool, Kaleidoscope, was launched; and the Joseph and Marie Field Chamber Music Center was founded, which celebrates chamber music at both pre-professional and amateur adult levels. During this time he also grew the School's endowment dramatically, helping Settlement live up to our founding principle of providing music education to all, regardless of financial means.
We have all been deeply affected by Bob's kindness, his humor, his intelligence, and by the musical gifts he gave us as a composer. His spirit is felt every day here at Settlement by our faculty, staff, families, and Board. We are grateful to have known him, and we will miss him.
A visitation is set for Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Burial Co./Baldi Funeral Home, 1327-29 S. Broad St. A memorial service will be at a later date.
We look forward to sharing more about Bob and his wonderful legacy in this Spring's tribute edition of Settlement's NOTES newsletter.
